INTERNATIONAL COURSE ON ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY IN SMALL ANIMALS

WITH ULTRASOUND DEVICE AND PIEZOELECTRIC EXTRACTION TECHNIQUE

The advent of Piezoelectric Surgery at the end of the last century has forever changed the paradigm of surgery on mineralized tissues such as bone and teeth, expanding its horizons and possibilities like never before.
This surgical technique, based on ultrasonic micro-oscillations, offers numerous advantages over rotary instruments or oscillating saws, such as selective cutting of mineralized tissues without damaging soft tissues, minimal pressure required on the handpiece, almost no bleeding, no necrosis on the cutting line, faster healing, and reduced post-operative pain.
In the veterinary field, oral and maxillofacial surgery has taken a significant leap forward thanks to piezosurgery, improving both comfort and ease of execution for the surgeon, while providing better benefits for the patient. For this reason, it is also referred to as “minimally invasive oral surgery”.

Some examples:

  • Mandibulectomies and maxillectomies with little to no bleeding;
  • Dental extractions with minimal or no alveolar bone removal, significantly speeding up odontostomatologic procedures—for example, allowing for complete extractions in cats suffering from chronic feline gingivostomatitis in just over one hour;

Extraction of teeth with roots affected by ankylosis, resorption, or fractures, as well as cases near pathological cortical bone, minimizing or eliminating the risk of iatrogenic mandibular fractures.

The course is aimed at veterinarians who are familiar with oral surgery and basic dog and cat dentistry using traditional techniques.
